Every Singapore Citizen aged 18 and above holds S$100 in SG Culture Pass credits, usable through the end of 2028 on local arts and heritage experiences: museum exhibitions, workshops, and cultural trails among them. Most of the coverage around it treats it as a solo or couple’s activity, a nudge to finally visit that exhibition you’ve been meaning to see. It’s worth thinking about it differently: as a reason to bring a grandparent along on a walk.
A museum exhibition is a fixed, curated version of history. A walk through a neighbourhood a grandparent actually grew up near, or worked in, or was married in, is a different kind of experience: the guide tells the documented history, and the street itself prompts the grandparent to tell their own. A shophouse facade or a clan association doorway can trigger a memory that a museum case never will, because it’s the same physical place, not a photograph of it.
Three of Serai’s guided heritage walks currently accept SG Culture Pass credits: a walk through the Singapore Botanic Gardens tracing its 165-year history, a Little India walk, and a Singapore River walk following the story of the city’s founding trade. Each runs on foot, at a pace a grandparent can comfortably keep, with a guide trained to invite personal stories along the way rather than just narrate past them.
If you’ve been holding onto Culture Pass credits without a specific plan for them, a guided walk with a grandparent is a concrete one: book a Little India, Botanic Gardens, or Singapore River walk, bring your grandparent, and let the neighbourhood do some of the conversation for you.
