A Legacy Since 1859
The story of the National Orchid Garden is woven into the very fabric of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. While the SBG opened in 1859, the dedicated Orchid Department began in 1928, spearheading an orchid breeding program that would eventually put Singapore on the global map. Since its official opening in 1995 by Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the garden has served as a permanent showcase for the world’s most sophisticated orchid hybrids, representing over a century of horticultural excellence.
Orchid Diplomacy
Perhaps the garden’s most unique feature is its role in international relations. Through Orchid Diplomacy, Singapore honours visiting heads of state and dignitaries by naming its finest hybrids after them. As you walk through the VIP Orchid Garden, you are walking through a “who’s who” of world history, viewing magnificent blooms named after some of the foremost world leaders. It is a gesture of friendship that blossoms forever.
The Tropical Montane Orchidetum
The Tropical Montane Orchidetum (TMO) offers a breathtaking transition from the tropical heat to the cool, misty climates of high-altitude forests. This state-of-the-art facility enables visitors to see rare “cool-house” orchids that otherwise couldn’t survive in Singapore.
